A parent letter and packet are in your child’s math folder. This folder will go home and come back each day. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Students will start taking timed multiplication tests on facts 0-10. We recommend making flash cards and using different online resources to practice, practice, practice!

Place Value Homework Packet

Last week, we started our new Math unit on place value.  For this unit, we are implementing a Blended Workshop Model which will allow students to learn and progress at their own pace.  While this is a new method for most, we believe that this will allow students to take more ownership in their learning and allow each student to get the most out of their math instruction.  During the Blended Workshop Model, students will be learning from a variety of sources, including small group teacher instruction, instructional videos, interactive practice time and varied options to show their learning.

Your child is working on accomplishing the following 5 goals:

Goal 1: I can read & write numbers in standard form and expanded form.

Goal 2: I can compare and order numbers using the symbols <, >, or =.

Goal 3: I can round whole numbers to the nearest ten and nearest hundred using my understanding of place values.

Goal 4: I can add whole numbers fluently to 1,000.

Goal 5: I can subtract whole numbers fluently to 1,000.

Our plan right now is to complete the majority of this unit prior to the winter break. Along with this new unit of learning, we have a place value mystery packet that will be completed independently at home as homework. This packet was sent home today in the yellow Math folder. We will not be assigning certain pages a night. Instead, we will simply ask that students spend 20 minutes each afternoon working on their packets. The packet is due Friday, January 8th, 2016. Students will keep the packet in their math folders as students may sometimes get the chance to work on it in class.

Student Council Needs Your Help!
The RCE Student Council has decided to adopt families in need this holiday season.  They are asking each child in grades K-5 to bring in only $1.  If everyone brings in just $1, then we'll have over $600 and can help as many as 6 families.

Student council Representatives will go by each class starting Friday and into next week to collect any dollars that come in.

Please be on the lookout for a parent letter and project/homework outline coming home next week.

Students will be starting Multiplication Stations next week, which are also self paced. They will begin with the 0's facts and move through to the 12's. They will complete activity stations that give them time at school to practice their facts. We will start taking graded, timed multiplication quizzes on the facts after the winter break.

At home, please have your child practice their multiplication facts as well. We recommend making flash cards and using different online resources to practice, practice, practice!

Hour of Code
Rice Creek Elementary has signed up to participate in the Hour of Code next week, December 7-11. This is a global movement to introduce students to computer science engineering with an emphasis on how to write basic computer code. Students in grades CD-2 will partner with students in grades 3-5 to collaborate on writing computer code to make a "video game" work.

Please encourage your child(ren) to practice coding at home as it promotes critical thinking skills as well.

For more information on this global event, please visit the website at https://hourofcode.com.

Thank you for your support.
